Community Profiles - Tilton
Originally, Tilton was called Sanbornton Bridge, and was granted in 1748 though not settled until 1762 due to the French & Indian War, which ended in 1760.
The first industries in Tilton were a gristmill and a sawmill on the banks of the Winnipesaukee River. These mills were soon followed by others.

In 1820, Charles Tilton, the owner of textile mills and the town's wealthiest citizen, called for incorporation, and in 1869 he asked to have the town renamed Tilton.
In 1879 he donated the Town Hall on the condition that the town was never renamed.
